Surface mount passive electronic components are best described as a flat chip with a terminal that is soldered onto the printed circuit board with no leads penetrating. They are extremely reliable and made to take up minimal space on the board. These surface mount components are made to perform a variety of circuit functions, such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and many active diodes, semiconductors and integrated circuits. Surface mounting lends itself well to a high degree of automation, reducing labor cost and greatly increasing production rates. An example of an advantage of SMD would be simpler automated assembly, Small errors in component placement are corrected automatically Components can be placed on both sides of the circuit board.
An example would be a thick film resistor, with 1% resistance tolerance and with a low temperature coefficient. Less well-known is critical resistance, the value below which power dissipation limits the maximum permitted current, and above which the limit is applied voltage. These resistors are produced in a range of values from very low ohm, for current sense purposes, to high resistance values above 10Mohm. Size, and position of leads (or terminals), are relevant to equipment designers; resistors must be physically large enough not to overheat when dissipating their power.
Built to use in electronic labs, electronic design kits, are extremely convenient as they offer all values of resistance, inductance or capacitance for any engineers use in designing and developing circuits. Kits are supplied packaged in notebooks, cases, cabinets and bins and may be bulk components, on tape or on tape and reel. Using components manufactured by authorized lines, Garrett Electronics builds these lab kits and is an authorized distributor. Kits are available with all standard values of 0402 1% SMD reisistors, For same-day-shipment, Garrett Electronics stocks supplies.
